Born in New South Wales in 1859, Lister studied extensively in England and Europe, returning to Australia in 1888, where he produced most of the landscapes and seascapes for which he is best known. He was president of the Royal Art Society and a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW. His work is represented in most state and provincial galleries. He died in 1943.
