Born in Kew, Victoria 1878; Died 1966. Painter, draughtsman and teacher.
Studies: Melbourne, N.G.V. School; Melbourne (under George Coates); Paris (under Jean Paul Laurens).
Appointed critic for the Melbourne Sun News Pictorial in 1923 and stayed for 17 years. Founded the Bell-Shore School which quickly became the centre of the modern art movement in Melbourne, early students included Drysdale, Herman and other well known painters. As an avant-garde leader Bell was instrumental in preventing the Australian Academy of Art from obtaining a Royal charter.
Awards: Crouch Prize, 1928; O.B.E conferred 1966.
